Job title
CEO - Sabre Insurance

How did you get into insurance?
I was offered a place on the Royal Insurance graduate training scheme, after A-levels. I'd already started at Lloyd's bank, where my first task of the day was cleaning the discarded McDonald's gherkins off the cash machine. It didn't seem like insurance could be any worse, and it was paying £500 a year more.

What you love about it?
The fact that no day is the same. There are constant changes we have to look at and assess, from regulatory variations to new developments and opportunities with our partners, and it's that what keeps it interesting.

What you hate about it?
Nothing - why would you do something for 30 years if you hate it? The motor insurer's ability to shoot themselves in the foot every few years by losing all pricing discipline is disappointingly impressive though.

Best professional achievement
Launching Tesco Underwriting from a standing start was a great challenge. More recently, the way that the Sabre team were amongst the first to recognise the impact of emerging inflation and take corrective action.

Biggest challenge facing the sector?
I would say the same as it has been for decades – avoiding competing away all profit every few years.

Biggest opportunity?
Not competing away all profit every few years!

Which gadget could you not live without?
My iPhone.

Football team?
West Ham.

Desert island discs?
A Best of Britpop compilation.

Biggest vice?
Pepsi Max.

How do you unwind at weekends?
Not sure if this is unwinding, or getting wound up, but watching West Ham.
