Cloud-only transformation
AWS migration complete

22nd November 2022

CDL has completed the migration of all customers running on its core insurer and broker ecosystems from on-premise hosting to Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud-hosting in just over 12 months, transforming the resilience, scalability, security and performance of its platforms.

The move delivers significant benefits for customers and helps to future-proof CDL's systems through integration with the most advanced tools and technologies.

As a high volume retail insurance specialist, CDL customers include Co-op Insurance, LV= Broker, RAC Insurance and Swinton Insurance, who have seen a range of performance, efficiency and cost efficiency benefits since the move.

Integra Insurance reported that in the 12 months post-deployment, traffic grew by over 400% without any degradation of service, while Ageas Insurance is able to respond to market conditions instantly, giving brokers faster access to competitive rates.

Mark Collins, Ageas Chief Information Officer, said: "This was our first deployment to AWS and we were delighted with how smoothly it went. The transition was seamless, giving us the confidence to accelerate plans for the migration of other business critical systems to the cloud."

CDL Chief Technology Officer, Robert Trueman, said: "This was the most ambitious and technically complex programme in CDL's history, heralding a new cloud-only future that differentiates CDL propositions significantly in the marketplace. It means we are now able to offer all our solutions as SaaS [Software as a Service], with the low code / no code model ensuring customers benefit from speed of deployment and ease of maintenance. Crucially, it also provides a springboard for growth, facilitating our plans for overseas expansion."

With better tooling and monitoring, CDL systems benefit from extensive automation, AI-based monitoring and environment consistency, allowing squads to focus on higher value development.

As part of the migration, CDL also significantly improved the technology stack by switching the database and the application server, critical to accessing the full benefits of being cloud-based - especially greater resilience and a more favourably priced licencing model.

Concurrently, CDL achieved prestigious AWS credentials, including AWS Financial Services Competency, certifying the highest level of specialisation, technical expertise and proven customer success, Amazon RDS Service Ready status and the 100 AWS certifications badge, signalling its globally leading cloud expertise.
